The original 930 acres of camp was purchased from the estate of George C. Crosby in 1966; originally being named Camp Heritage, and officially opened in 1968. Crosby Lodge, now the Campmaster building was donated to camp by the Crosby family. Camp has since grown to 1,200 acres and in 1985 Viking Council changed the name to Camp Stearns.
